Cheetah vs Leopard Print: How to Tell the Difference

Cheetah print is solid black spots, round or oval, scattered over a tan coat. Leopard print is rosettes: broken, flower-shaped rings of dark marks around a lighter centre.

How to tell them apart in three seconds

  1. Look inside one spot. Filled in all the way through means cheetah. A ring of dark marks around a lighter middle means leopard.
  2. Look at the shape. Cheetah spots are simple round or oval dots. Leopard rosettes are irregular, broken outlines, a bit like a rose seen from above.
  3. Ignore the label. The two names are mixed up so often that people search for why leopard print gets called cheetah print. Trust the spots, not the product name.

What real cheetah print looks like

According to the Smithsonian's National Zoo, a cheetah has yellow or tan fur with solid black round or oval spots about 0.75 to 1.5 inches across. The spots cover nearly the whole body; only the white throat and belly are bare. A black "tear mark" runs from each eye down to the mouth, and the tail ends in four to six black rings. No two cheetahs have the same spots, which is how researchers tell individuals apart.

The same page notes that cheetahs are sometimes confused with leopards, which are much heavier cats with rosette-shaped spots and no tear marks.

Where jaguar print fits in

Jaguars have rosettes too. The San Diego Zoo describes them as having an irregular, broken border and often a spot in the centre, while a leopard's rosettes have no dot inside. The quick rule: no ring at all is cheetah, an empty ring is leopard, and a ring with a dot inside points to jaguar.

Cheetah and leopard print questions

Is cheetah print the same as leopard print?

No. Cheetah print is made of solid spots, while leopard print is made of rosettes, which are rings of dark marks around a lighter centre. The two names get mixed up a lot because both cats are tan with dark markings, but the spot shape always tells you which is which.

What is the difference between cheetah print and leopard print?

Cheetah print has solid black round or oval spots. Leopard print has rosettes: broken, flower-shaped rings of dark spots with a lighter middle and no dot inside. The Smithsonian's National Zoo describes the cheetah's spots as solid and the leopard's as rosette-shaped.

How can you tell if a print is cheetah or leopard?

Look inside one spot. If it is filled in all the way through, it is cheetah print. If it is a ring or a cluster of dark marks around a lighter middle, it is leopard print. Ignore the product name, since the two words are often used loosely.

What does real cheetah print look like?

On a real cheetah, the fur is yellow or tan with solid black round or oval spots about 0.75 to 1.5 inches across. The spots cover nearly the whole body; only the white throat and belly are unmarked. Each cheetah's spot pattern is unique, like a fingerprint.

What is the difference between leopard print and jaguar print?

Both have rosettes, but a jaguar's rosettes have an irregular, broken border and often a dark spot in the centre. A leopard's rosettes have no spot inside. So: an empty ring means leopard, a ring with a dot inside points to jaguar, and no ring at all means cheetah.

Is cheetah print or leopard print more popular?

In US Google searches, leopard print is slightly ahead: about 90,500 searches a month for "leopard print" against about 74,000 for "cheetah print", according to Semrush data from October 2026.

Why do people call leopard print cheetah print?

Because the two cats look alike at a glance. Both have tan coats with dark markings, and the Smithsonian's National Zoo notes that cheetahs are sometimes confused with leopards. The giveaway is the spot shape: rosettes mean leopard, solid spots mean cheetah.
